At least 13 people perish and 98 hurt in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.

The crash happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.

“We shall rigorously clarify the cause of this incident,” stated the country's president.

The leader confirmed that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The official added plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Major Initiative of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the immediate past president, whose presidency finished the previous year. This rail line was closely associated with his government's developmental vision for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to revitalize the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The construction of both railway systems was supervised by the armed forces, marking a dramatic increase of its duties in public infrastructure. They were built at an accelerated speed, beating predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that government.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently sparked ongoing concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This encompasses an previous collision this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen two non-lethal derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the tragedy, the chief of a primary political opposition called for an immediate halt in the development and management of all similar projects.

This stoppage was suggested while awaiting a comprehensive safety audit. The party stated that the tragedy "demands immediate answers."

In reply, the head of state maintained that the train had been operating in total adherence to all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the development and management of these vital undertakings.
