The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities determined he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under home confinement.
The one-time leader was found guilty of plotting a military coup in last fall and sentenced more than 27 years in incarceration, but he continued under house arrest pending legal challenges.
High Court Judge the presiding justice said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a safety action after recent developments came to light.
This involved trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a call for a demonstration that could "allow for a possible escape.
Legal Document Reveals Flight Fears
In a filing authorising the custody, Justice Moraes said data from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's plan to remove the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his flight.
This, it said, would be "facilitated by the disorder caused by the gathering called by his son.
His child, Flávio, who works as a congressional representative, called for a assembly of his supporters near the former president's residence to take place on the weekend.
The senator wrote on digital networks on last Friday: "Are you going to fight for your nation, or see it all from your phone there on your settee? I call on you to struggle with us."
He said the demonstration would be so backers could seek divine intervention for his physical condition and for the restoration of democratic rule in our land."
Diplomatic Refuge Fears
Part of the judge's decision was the possibility of his transfer to embassies near the home, considering that the probes revealed a history of arranging to ask for protection through a diplomatic representation", a declaration said.
The legal document highlights that the United States embassy in the federal district, Brazil's capital, is positioned around 8 miles from Bolsonaro's home.
International Reactions
His judicial problems have generated frustration from fellow right-wing populist American leader President Trump, prompting him to enact a fifty percent tax on imports of Brazilian goods.
The former president is being held in a Federal Police station in the capital and will experience a custody hearing on Sunday.
Recent Judicial Appeals
It was only on the previous day that the former president's lawyers asked the Supreme Court to authorize him to complete his entire prison term under house arrest, with electronic monitoring.
They also petitioned that Bolsonaro be allowed to exit his dwelling for medical care, saying he needed frequent medical attention for pulmonary infections and other illnesses.
Background on Conviction
The former president was convicted of heading a plot aimed at maintaining his control after he failed to win the 2022 election to his political opponent, Lula.
Supreme Court justices said that he knew of a plot which encompassed plans to kill Lula and his running partner, Geraldo Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been managing his judicial proceedings.
The plot was stopped because it didn't receive the support of the army and air force commanders. The current president was inaugurated without issue on January 1st, 2023.
But a following week, on 8 January, many Bolsonaro supporters stormed and vandalised public facilities in the capital, the capital city.
The law enforcement intervened and around fifteen hundred individuals were taken into custody.
The judges found that the protesters had been provoked by Bolsonaro whose plan, they said, was for the national armed forces to step in, bring back stability and return him to office.
At the time, his attorneys called the 27 years and three months sentence extremely harsh.
He was also barred from campaigning for office until the year 2060 - a decade minus two years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.
The ex-leader called the court case a political persecution and said it was aimed at blocking him running in the next presidential race.
