Fresh analysis suggests that people who stop using new slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain lost weight far faster than those who halt traditional lifestyle programs.
Findings released in a leading health publication shows that while obese individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Users purchasing these treatments must be aware of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery means a reversion to starting weight within about a year and a half.
Analyzing Therapies
The analysis, which examined dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with older methods.
Researchers note that people who lose weight through dieting usually have a less rapid weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Fast Rebound
Doctors propose the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the amplified weight return.
These medications imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Withdrawal of this medication leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Condition?
Health authorities advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts argue that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the therapy is often long-term.
This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "highlight the chronic nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Accounts
Individuals who have discontinued the medication describe a powerful return of hunger.
"I experienced a trigger flipping and I was suddenly starving," described a patient.
This challenge is compounded if users have not established permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Growing Adoption
Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand remaining high.
- Use is higher among females compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, experts emphasize that while these medications are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits hinges on ongoing lifestyle support.
