The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Win at The Game Awards — A New Category May Address This Issue

As any significant awards ceremony approaches, one notices an outcry for introducing fresh award types to recognize underappreciated efforts and satisfy the spirits of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.

A fellow writer has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. So would board games, which is someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize because like all blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request remains most pressing above others. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and it will always spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that movie academies steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an essential concession in the world of video games, which are so diverse they hardly constitute as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these award types effectively encompass numerous genres, and you can find room for numerous titles.

Not so for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Which classification works between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games released every year that have no home during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game got overlooked completely in 2014
  • A different innovative game missed out that year
  • Well-received sorting experience got ignored that year
  • Just some brain-teasers barely qualified for niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often compact experiences, yet the craft of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Well-known matching games rank among the most-played games worldwide and have been for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game rivals famous sandbox experiences claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, while interacting with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. One could readily select multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Logic title developers function at the demanding boundary game development, developing some of essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
