Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge Technology in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with video review technology

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in employing video review systems.

Video review systems will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes are granted the option to question specific rulings made by the chair umpire, following the practice already in operation at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

The new system will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This step follows just a season following the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the centuries-old role of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Players cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to review other decisions, including:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance end of a rally.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the number of reviews a competitor can initiate.

A Recent Example

A recent example took place in Indian Wells recently, where a top player initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and ruled the player was guilty of interference, granting the point to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at all of its tournaments.

Further Updates

A further change at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where spectators have occasionally been uncertain if a ball was in or out.

In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
